What is Microsoft Unified Communications&Collaboration (UCC)

Answer

With the technologies of integrated communication and collaboration (Unified Communications & Collaboration, UCC) Microsoft offers an efficient and easy way of communication across several applications. Unified interfaces extend the compatibility between office products and allow an easy and secure electronic data exchange.
The central UCC element is Microsoft® Exchange™. Other UCC-applications are Outlook Webaccess, ActiveSync, Outlook Anywhere, Autodiscover, POP3, IMAP4, Unified Messaging, Office Communications, Office Enterprise, Office SharePoint and Office SharePoint Designer. However, simplifying the communication channels also represent an increasing challenge to the security, since data exchange between the UCC servers must be secured.

UCC / SAN SSL certificates

Traditional SSL certificates suit for securing single domains or sub-domains. For UCC this means that one has to order and install a different SSL certificate for each server.

As a special type of SSL certificate the UCC includes an extension, which allows several so called „Subject Alternative Names“ (SAN). These SAN can be prefixes (sub-domains), host names and private IP-addresses. With this, the UCC can be used to secure several SANs with just one certificate. The entire communication between several servers is encrypted with one single UCC certificate. This leads to an important decrease in the complexity of the server configuration.
