Standard SSL certificates are issued to a single Fully Qualified Domain Name only and can only be used on the exact domain (including sub-domain, eg. www). In contrast to this, Wildcard SSL certificates are issued to *.domain.com. The * character replaces the fixed sub-domain with a "variable" one. With this, an SSL certificate issued to *.swisssign.com can be used for example for the following domains:
SwissSign Wildcard SSL Certificates can be used for an unlimited number of sub-domains. In addition SwissSign Wildcards are issued with a free Subject Alternative Name (SAN). This means that the certificate can be used to secure both the domain name without the * (eg. https://swisssign.com) and infinite variations of the domain (eg. https://*.swisssign.com).
