Wildcard SSL

The SSL certificate for multiple subdomains

Standard SSL certificates are issued to a single Fully Qualified Domain Name FQDN only and can only be used on the exact domain (including sub-domain, eg. www). In contrast to this, Wildcard SSL certificates are issued to *.domain.com. The * character replaces the fixed sub-domain with a "variable" one. With this, an SSL certificate issued to *.swisssign.com can be used for example for the following domains:

  • www.swisssign.comWildcard Silver SSLWildcard Gold SSL
  • secure.swisssign.com
  • ww2.swisssign.com
  • mail.swisssign.com
  • anything.swisssign.com

SwissSign Wildcard SSL certificates can be used for an unlimited number of sub-domains. In addition SwissSign wildcards are issued with a free Subject Alternative Name (SAN). This means that the certificate can be used to secure both the domain name without the * (eg. https://swisssign.com) and infinite variations of the domain (eg. https://*.swisssign.com). Please note that several chains, say more than 2 dots in the domain are not allowed. Example: support.mail.bern.swisssign.com

SwissSign reserves the right to reject – based on a security-check – any wildcard certificate order.

  • A copy of a legal, valid photo ID (e.g. passport, identity card, drivers license) of the applicant
  • A copy of a legal, valid photo ID (e.g. passport, identity card, drivers license) of the authorized and co-signing domain holder according to whois (technical or administrative contact)
Wildcard SSL Gold (documents must be submitted via physical post)
  • The signed registration form (original)
  • A copy of the applicant’s passport or Swiss identity card
  • A copy of a certified excerpt of the trade registry, not older than 6 months (federal directory for public organizations). Other proof of organization on demand.
  • A copy of the passport or Swiss identity card of the authorized and co-signing persons according to the trade registry/federal directory excerpt
  • A copy of the passport or Swiss identity card of the authorized and co-signing domain holder according to whois (technical or administrative contact)
